Growth returns thanks to a sterling savior
Despite what has been a trying 18 months for most jewelry store owners across the United States, several months of largely consistent growth data suggest things are looking up.
The numbers are still well short of the highs of two years ago, but are a positive sign that the decline has stopped. We are now in for a slow but sure period of recovery; the data shows year-on-year growth each month since June 2009, except for January.

Maria Sharapova brings tennis to Tiffany, wearing their Elsa Peretti diamond earrings on the glittering grass court stage.
Glamazon and tennis champion Maria Sharapova will wear earrings by celebrated Tiffany designer Elsa Peretti throughout the Wimbledon championships. The three-time Grand Slam winner also wore Elsa Peretti earrings at the French Open, which ended recently at the Roland Garros Stadium in Paris.
The earrings selected for Wimbledon are a sterling silver design from Elsa Peretti's 'Diamonds by the Yard' collection. Introduced in 1974, the pieces feature modern design with fine chains and bezel-set diamonds.
"It's a pleasure to wear her signature of elegant simplicity." said Sharapova in a press release. |

Gold has always been an attractive investment, whether you're buying it to wear, to decorate your home or - for some investors - to store in your vault. With the price of gold cresting over $1,000 an ounce, many gold followers want to get in on the action - and Harrods, of all places, is answering the call.
Harrods is betting that their customers will want to buy gold bars at the same place they buy their gold bangles. Go figure? They're offering bars of pure Swiss gold bullion out of a miniature vault in addition to a selection of valuable gold coins from around the world.
The new gold sales are part of a collaboration with the Swiss refiner Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux. Customers can also buy online and then collect their purchase in person. A full-sized gold bar would cost about $466,000, and those who don't have a place to store it can also arrange for a safe deposit box, vault or international service courier.

Belgium’s diamond trade in the first quarter of 2010 regained some of the ground it had lost during the height of the global economic downturn, thanks to the increasing sophistication of mainland consumers who are driving the demand for diamonds.

Zale Corporation reported they incurred a net loss of $189.5 million for the fiscal year ended July 31st, compared to a net loss from continuing operations of $6.5 million in fiscal year 2008.
Revenues were $1.78 billion in 2009 compared to $2.14 billion for 2008, a decrease of 16.8%.
Zale also reported a fourth quarter net loss of $89.8 million, compared to a loss of $10.0 million in the fourth quarter in 2008. Revenues in the fourth quarter were $357.1 million, a decline of 21.7% compared to $456.2 million in last year's fourth quarter.
